Description
This interactive workshop focuses on the skills, tools, and information a frontline service provider needs to effectively counsel a person experiencing an unintended pregnancy and refer them for prenatal care, adoption, or abortion, while prioritizing patient autonomy and professional ethics.
Target Audience
Anyone who works directly with clients and patients including, but not limited to:
- Nurses
- Social workers
- Case workers
- Advocates
- Peer support specialists
- Hotline volunteers
- Behavioral health professionals
- People who work in the following systems of care: domestic violence and sexual assault support services, substance use treatment, HIV/AIDS service organizations, and primary care
Learning Objectives
By the end of this training participants will:
- have learned how common unintended pregnancy is in the US;
- understand that conversations around pregnancy can be nuanced and that this might impact the provider’s ability to respond appropriately to client needs;
- be able to name and describe basic pregnancy options counseling techniques;
- have had a chance to practice having an options counseling conversation, giving and receiving feedback;
- be able to name the pregnancy options and important case management recommendations; and
- learn how to use Provide’s Abortion Referrals Tool and Pregnancy Referrals Toolkit to strengthen their ability to support the people they serve.
